Women's Health Q & A

What can I expect during an annual women’s exam?

This once-a-year visit to Family Medical Clinic gives your provider the opportunity to check your overall health, with a focus on your reproductive health. Your annual women's exam is an excellent opportunity for you to discuss issues affecting you physically, emotionally, or mentally in an open and honest environment.

During your appointment, your provider evaluates your overall well-being, including screenings for depression and other mental health issues. Your provider also performs a thorough physical that includes a pelvic exam to identify any abnormalities in your reproductive system.

To monitor your breast health, your provider does a manual exam to check for lumps or other issues. If you’re over 40 or have signs of further complications, your provider may refer you for a mammogram.

Why do I need a Pap smear?

During your pelvic exam, your provider also performs a Pap smear, a test that involves the collection of cells from your cervix to screen for precancerous cells.

The test is painless, and your doctor uses a cotton swab for cell collection. Your provider sends the cell sample to the on-site laboratory for analysis.

Following a Pap smear, you may experience light bleeding that should resolve within a day or two. If results of the test show abnormalities, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have cancer. Abnormal test results can be the result of infections or other medical issues. Your provider discusses your results and may recommend additional testing.
